Helen MacKinnon – A Holding Place

I attended university for the first time at the age of 30. Completed my Master’s degree at 45 years old and began working in the counselling field. I decided to start my own private practice so I bought a commercial building, moved furniture in and started seeing clients. I had to take a huge leap of faith, but I’m certainly glad that I did.
I call myself a “late bloomer” and started A Holding Place just after my 50th birthday. I always wanted to own my own business, so told myself, “If I don’t do it now, I never will”. Don’t say “I’m too old or it’s too late”, look at me, I did it! You have to take a leap of faith, but I’m certainly glad I did!
In my professional counselling private practice, my original plan was to work on my own, but I brought on other counsellors because I didn’t want to turn away business.
Now A Holding Place is a thriving clinic of multiple professionals offering counselling to individuals, couples and families. We are service providers for a number of EAP and EFAP programs helping employees and their families deal with a variety of issues. I have been in business since October 2011 and my annual revenues have grown each year.
I won the NLOWE 2014 Entrepreneur of the Year award in the Start-up category.
