Peter Evans – EDMS Dental

I’ve had an unusual journey in my career. Although I am now the CEO and founder of a technology company, my very first job was as a carnie for Conklin Shows. As a teenager, I had no idea how much my life would be impacted by this summer job. I travelled with the carnival throughout North America for 5 yrs, had long, intense work hours, and was responsible for what seemed on the surface, a ‘game’ with air guns. Turns out I was pretty good at running a business: the summer of ’79 that game grossed over 1 million dollars. I was hooked!

After two years studying mathematics and science at Queen’s, I made the audacious decision to drop out and continue running the air gun game for Conklin Shows full time as the company ventured into the USA. After doing this for several years, I then moved on to try other roles in various professional contexts, but ultimately I ended up building and selling businesses after business, mostly focused on implementing large-scale Oracle database systems.

A few years ago I was talking to a friend who owned a number of successful dental clinics,14, about the technological challenges that came with managing it. Seeing the market trend towards multi-clinic ownership, I identified a great opportunity in the business system offerings for in the dental industry. Working with several dental support organizations (DSOs), dentists and major dental industry players, I founded EDMS (Enterprise Dental Management Systems) in 2013 at the age of 52.

We’re really proud of our platform. Our Dentallytics product is a fully integrated Software-as-a-Service offering management reporting for group dental clinics. Our technology and dashboards allow an at-a-glance view of all financial, operational and administrative reporting. The platform is technology agnostic and works with data from ANY practice management software, as we’ve learned to convert the data to our own model. Our proprietary algorithms also deliver analytics and deep insights into the business, enabling our clients to improve clinic performance and proactively plan for growthtext

A big part of EDMS’ success lies in the amazing team we’ve assembled. Working with the Youth Service Bureau, I’ve been able to find incredible talent who came to Canada from all corners of the world. The team is definitely a big part of the ‘secret sauce’ that makes EDMS so special. I credit a large part of my ability to build and lead teams to the skills I have gained playing, coaching and refereeing hockey. I’ve been a national certified coach for 40 yrs and a natonally certified referee for 20 yrs. When not working, I can often be found on the ice at an Ottawa hockey arena having fun.
