Angie Arthur – Gran’s Bakeshop
Before starting my business I worked at the local Personal Care Home till retirement (26 years) and then went on to work at a local grocery store at their in store bakery. I also baked and sold my products every summer at Lac du Bonnet’s Farmers market. I did this for 27 years. I also was the president of the Farmers Market for 24 years. Being a young mom with 2 girls we spent many an afternoon baking and having tea parties so baking was very much a part of my life right from the get go.
I ended up having to quit my job at the in store bakery due to health reasons, going on sick leave. Knowing I couldn’t return to the normal work force I happened upon a government self-employment program for those on EI. I had always dreamt of having my own business and here was my chance. I was 58 years old when I took this leap of faith.
My original proposal to the program was denied so, not being a quitter, I revamped the proposal and was gingerly accepted by the program board. It was a cheap and cheerful start and I haven’t looked back since.
I own and operate a small quaint bake shop. I am well known for my cinnamon buns and cookies. It’s more of a sweet shop, with cookies, cinnamon buns, pies and cakes being on the menu. It’s a from scratch bake shop. Old fashioned goodness just like mom or grandma used to make. Brings you a step back in time. My oldest daughter helps out by supplementing my baking with some of hers.
I love to recommend other businesses to customers looking for something I don’t have. I never hesitate to donate whenever possible to community events. Posters about town goings on are always put up as well.
